Crystal methamphetamine more commonly known as “ice”, is an illicit drug generally taken in the form of smoking the substance and is a powerful stimulant derived from the powder form of methamphetamine.
The significant difference is its appearance; it has a transparent crystal-like form that looks like ice.
As with most drug use, it comes with a high risk of dependence, and meth addiction from ice is no exception.
It can take up to four days to eliminate the substance from the body. On average, methamphetamine can take around 10 hours for half of the drug amount to leave the system although for people who use meth regularly over a long time rather than someone who only uses it once, the detection times may take longer.
What if Methamphetamine is Mixed With Other Substances?
It is not unusual for individuals to combine other substances with their meth use as it can alter how they feel. Most people consume alcohol in conjunction with “ice”, as the effects of alcohol on the body can alleviate typical jitteriness caused by crystal meth. The components found in alcohol inhibit the metabolism of methamphetamine, making the elimination from the body much longer when alcohol is ingested.
As well as alcohol, other substances that are combined with methamphetamine include:
- Stimulants, mainly cocaine.
- Opioids, such as heroin.
- Ketamine, is a synthetic compound used as an anaesthetic and analgesic drug and also (illicitly) as a hallucinogen.
- Poppers (vasodilators).
- GHB (a sedative drug).
When other substances are combined with methamphetamine, the reaction to them can be unpredictable as they can have serious effects on the body and nervous system. It also takes longer to eradicate all the substances from the system.
How Long Does it Take After the Detection of Meth Use to Leave Your System?
The presence of ice (crystal methamphetamine) in the body is detected in urine for up to 72 hours and can also be traced in hair follicles for 90 days or even more. The effects of meth can be anything from 8 to 24 hours, depending on each person’s metabolism rate and the amount of the dosage taken.
You should be aware that if you have used the substance and need to satisfy a drug test, whether for employment or legal purposes, meth can be detected in a urine test up to a week after its use.
Drug tests generally consist of taking urine or hair samples to trace methamphetamine in the system. Detection for crystal meth can vary according to the type of test undertaken.
- Urine: Upon crystal meth entering the bloodstream, it is broken down into metabolites, some of which are absorbed by the body. A significant amount is eliminated through the kidneys and eliminated in urine. After a single meth use, a urine test can detect metabolites only for a few days. With regular substance abuse, this can continue circulating in the body, and due to the build-up, it can take approximately a week after it was last used for a negative urine test result.
- Hair: When ingested, crystal meth is circulated by the bloodstream to every part of the body; this includes the cells of hair follicles. These cells are pushed out of the follicles as hair grows, forming the visible part of the hair. These cells can retain traces of methamphetamine, acting a bit like a time capsule. A hair follicle test is used for detecting meth and its metabolites for around 90 days after the last drug use. Heavy users can have traces of meth in hair samples for longer than 120 days.
- Blood: It is a very rare practice, but occasionally there may be times when blood testing for methamphetamine is required. Ice that has been smoked, snorted, or injected will show up immediately in a blood test and can remain in the bloodstream for up to 3 days.
- Saliva: As with most drugs, ice can be detected in saliva tests. The substance can be traced in oral fluids for up to 2 days after taking the drug.
It should be remembered that the timeframes given are only estimates and not exact. Factors that can alter the timescale depend on each individual, the frequency of use, metabolism rates, and if other substances have been combined.
Different drug screening can vary detection times and should be taken into account. For example, the positive result of a urine test may show up for 4 days after single use of the drug, yet a positive hair test may be detected some 3 months later.
Crystal Meth Addiction and Withdrawal Symptoms.
Some of the typical symptoms of crystal meth withdrawal include:
- Fatigue: Users tend to become inactive and lethargic during the first week of withdrawal. This symptom can peak after 5 days and the desire to sleep for a long time is quite common.
- Dreams and visions: Some people may experience having vivid dreams during this time which is a typical symptom. These visions may decrease and fade within a week.
- Anxiety: Meth withdrawal can produce anxiety disorders. Around 30% of users will experience some form of anxiety.
- Depression: Low esteem and depressed mood altercations can continue for up to 3 weeks or longer but should improve over time.
- Hallucinations: Some of these experiences may feel quite unpleasant such as imagining things and delusional psychotic thoughts.
- Increase of appetite: Meth use generally has the effect of losing weight whilst taking the substance but increases the appetite when they stop. Initially, they will have a strong impulse to consume sugary foods. This craving generally surpasses after 2 or 3 weeks.
- Craving for more ice: As with most drug withdrawal symptoms, strong cravings for more of the substance are quite common and associated with the withdrawal process from an addictive substance.
What are the Phases of Meth Withdrawal?
Because crystal methamphetamine is a highly addictive drug, and its effects can reach the brain and central nervous system when someone stops using the substance, there are associated withdrawal symptoms that start to manifest.
As soon as the meth in your system starts to decrease, the body develops a lack of energy to the point of feeling you have hit the floor. There may be an increased desire to sleep through this stage, which usually lasts a day or two.
Along with the need to sleep and constantly feeling tired, you may experience bouts of depression. In some cases, depression can be so uncomfortable there is more chance someone will return to the habit to avoid the unpleasantness rather than stick it out.
There will be irregularities in sleeping patterns, appetite, and cardio rhythms that may be accompanied by shortness of breath, feeling dizzy, or even confusion.
Post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS) often occurs months after recovery and may be triggered by various situations that serve as a reminder of the disorder. These symptoms are temporary and may only last several hours or a few days.
Does Treatment for Meth Addiction Involve Detox?
Ice or crystal methamphetamine addiction will require a professional detox centre with medical supervision if they want to stop using the substance and make a full recovery.
Detoxing from meth is the process needed to eradicate the drug and cleanse the body from the damaging substance. Needless to say, as soon as you stop using the drug, withdrawal symptoms begin to manifest, some of which can be quite unpleasant. However, as the body detoxifies, the symptoms start to fade until they wear off completely.
As each person is an individual and may react in different ways, according to a majority of patients who have successfully quit the habit, they agreed the most severe symptom they experienced during withdrawal was the feeling of crashing down from a meth trip, creating intense cravings to reach out for the drug.
With this in mind, detox must be performed within a safe and secure environment; otherwise, most patients will resort back to taking the substance as quickly as they can.
It is worth mentioning that before a detox treatment program is put into action, a thorough assessment should be made to determine the issues surrounding substance abuse and mental health for each person. This information will take into account the state of mental health before and during their addiction, their dependency, quantities used, age, and history of other drug use, among other relative matters.
