That buzzword is Fentanyl, and it\u2019s been showing up in toxicology reports recently for more overdose-related deaths than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the-history-and-medical-use-of-fentanyl\"><\/span>The History and Medical Use of Fentanyl<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fentanyl has actually been around since the late 1950s, but it was relatively unknown to the general public until a couple of years ago. The drug was originally designed for treating acute pain in opioid-intolerant patients, as an adjunct to anesthesia, and for managing advanced cancer pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, however, reports have been surfacing that indicate a rise in fentanyl-related overdoses. Prince, for example, who famously died of an accidental overdose back in 2016, had exceedingly high levels of fentanyl in his body at the time of his death. Since then, we\u2019ve been hearing more and more about this powerful and potentially deadly synthetic opioid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-you-should-know-about-fentanyl\"><\/span>What You Should Know About Fentanyl<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fentanyl is anywhere from 80-500 times stronger than morphine.<\/strong> (Yep, that\u2019ll get you high. It\u2019s also incredibly difficult to control just how high you\u2019ll get at that potency.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A dose as small as 2 milligrams of fentanyl can be fatal.<\/strong> (For reference, one milligram equals one one-thousandth of a gram, and one gram is about \u00bd teaspoon.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fentanyl has been around since 1959, but it\u2019s more readily available on the black market now than ever before.<\/strong> (Lock up your children. No, really.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Non-pharmaceutical fentanyl is made in clandestine labs.<\/strong> (Dodginess factor = 11.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In the 1980s, underground chemists altered the chemical makeup of fentanyl and came up with \u201cChina White,\u201d which is highly toxic and potentially lethal.<\/strong> (It sounds fancy, but it\u2019s actually poison.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Most users don\u2019t know their heroin is laced with fentanyl.<\/strong> (And they often don\u2019t find out until it\u2019s too late.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Popularly referred to as \u201cKiller Heroin,\u201d <\/strong>a mixture of fentanyl and heroin can cause death within minutes of injection.<strong> <\/strong>(We\u2019ll have what they\u2019re having\u2014not.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Naloxone, typically used to lift an emergency room patient out of opioid intoxication, is often not enough for a \u201cChina White\u201d or \u201cKiller Heroin\u201d overdose.<\/strong> Several days\u2019 worth of being on a naloxone drip is often required. (Yeah, it really is that bad.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the-link-between-fentanyl-and-amnesia\"><\/span>The Link Between Fentanyl and Amnesia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also worth mentioning is that there\u2019s a rare form of amnesia spreading in Massachusetts among individuals with a history of drug abuse and\/or overdose, primarily heroin. A March 2018 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMc1716355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> published in the <em>New England Journal of Medicine<\/em> cites 18 cases in total, and all but one of the cases confirm a history of drug abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The patients that were studied had acute anterograde amnesia, which is the inability to form new memories after the event that caused the amnesia in the first place. In this case, fentanyl is cited as a likely culprit because the appearance of this syndrome coincides with the rise of fentanyl overdose deaths, according to a 2018 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/nova\/next\/body\/fentanyl-amnesia-spreading\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PBS article<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether or not fentanyl or any other drug is responsible for the Massachusetts amnesia cases has yet to be confirmed with certainty. Based on the laundry list of risk factors associated with the substance, however, it\u2019s really not something that you want to be messing with. It\u2019s highly potent, very easy to overdose on, and, in short, it can kill you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the-dangers-of-street-drugs\"><\/span>The Dangers of Street Drugs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you make the decision to use street drugs, you really have no idea what you\u2019re putting into your body unless you\u2019ve cooked the stuff up in your own bathtub.
