Kratom may be just as addictive as heroin and other prescription opioids&#8230;..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-is-kratom\"><\/span>What is Kratom?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those of you who haven\u2019t heard of the stuff, kratom comes from a plant indigenous to Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6473843\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mitragyna speciosa<\/a>. The plant was used medicinally for centuries in these countries but is now illegal in all of them. It is, however, legal in most other parts of the world and it\u2019s being touted by advocates as a \u201csafe\u201d supplement to treat opioid withdrawal. Moreover, its reported \u201csafety\u201d is in part based on the fact that it\u2019s natural. That said, heroin, or \u201csmack\u201d, is derived from the seedpod of the very natural poppy flower, and the last time we heard anyone report that heroin was healthy was, well,\u00a0<em>never<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kratom, or Mitragyna speciosa, leaves were originally chewed, but now it&#8217;s generally sold in extract, powder, or capsule form. It\u2019s sold as an herbal supplement, but there\u2019s very little oversight when it comes to quality control and labeling. Because of this, buyers often don\u2019t know what they\u2019re getting, particularly if they\u2019re purchasing it online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s global controversy over whether or not kratom should be considered an opioid, but numerous studies show that its key compounds bind to opioid receptors in the brain. In low doses, kratom produces a stimulant effect similar to coffee, but higher doses actually produce a sedative effect that\u2019s more comparable to morphine, heroin and other opioids. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"psychoactive-compounds-in-kratom-mitragynine-and-7-hydroxymitragynine\"><\/span>Psychoactive Compounds in Kratom: Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medscape.org\/viewarticle\/903096\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent study<\/a>\u00a0conducted at High Point University in North Carolina showed two major psychoactive compounds in kratom: mitragynine (MG) and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-HMG). In the study, test rats were given the compounds separately. The effects on the rats from each compound were then investigated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MG was found to be non-addictive. The 7-HMG, on the hand, was found to have a very high potential for dependency and abuse, binding to the brain\u2019s areas that trigger intense cravings for more opioids. Furthermore, these triggers included cravings for other opioids besides kratom. This suggests that some people might need to take increased doses of different opioids to experience the same original effects of the kratom. It\u2019s also quite common for people to switch from kratom to heroin because heroin is ultimately cheaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"why-kratom-is-so-dangerous\"><\/span>Why Kratom is so Dangerous<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the idea that using kratom to kick your heroin or other opioid habit is an alluring prospect, it\u2019s also a dangerous claim, and it\u2019s one that\u2019s caused many people to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kembalirehab.com\/breaking-the-chronic-relapse-cycle\/\">relapse<\/a>. This very claim also has the potential to drive non-addicted individuals straight into a brand new dependency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only is kratom highly addictive, but its withdrawal symptoms can be quite severe. Physical symptoms include muscle and bone pain, mood swings, hallucinations, delusions, tremors, nausea, runny nose, and fatigue. Emotional withdrawal symptoms can include depression, anxiety, difficulty experiencing pleasure, and insomnia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"is-kratom-worth-it\"><\/span>Is Kratom worth it?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kratom is addictive. Period. It can also lead to dependency on other substances, or back to to the substance that you were trying to kick in the first place. It\u2019s possible to overdose on kratom as well, and there have been deaths reported from its use. Because it\u2019s not closely monitored, however, it\u2019s unknown what the fatal dose is.
